The trinity of pickup: subcommunication, buying temperature and compliance
The trinity of pickup
In this section, as well as in many others, Mehow shows he did a very thoughtful exercise in theorizing and structuring his experiences and ideas about seduction in Get the Girl! Nightlife edition eBook. In a very practical way, he identifies that the three most important ingredients for attraction are:
- Subcommunication of attractive qualities, already discussed;
- Buying Temperature Spiking, an idea made popular by Tyler Durden; and
- Compliance, one interesting idea from persuasion techniques which consist on escalating the willingness of the other person to comply with your requests. Start small (“please hold my drink”) then move upwards to getting physical, moving the girl to the bar, dance floor, lounge and finally extract from the venue.
In the next post, I’ll start to comment in detail the techniques for each one of these elements of the pickup trinity.
The tease
Now it’s time to set the frame of the interaction as demonstrating how social and fun you are. For this, Mehow proposes the use of Mystery’s ideas on teasing the target girl. Doing so, he says, makes her attracted to you and also causes her friends to think that you and the target are not getting along.
I have some restrictions regarding the second consideration. It all depends on the girls and how you deliver your teases, but in most cases girls are smarter than that. By teasing with the “you’re the coolest girl I’ve met… in the last 20 seconds” it’s quite clear that you are being flirty (of course it all depends on your voice tone and pacing, body language, eye contact…) – which is perfectly fine.
My point is that for me it is not essential to be super careful in not letting her friends know you are interested in the target. If it is noticed, it should be graceful, not try hard.
The problem with “choosing the target”
Mehow, Mystery and many others make the life of their readers and students easier by simplifying the interaction model with the clear instruction: choose the target. So in an imaginary group of 4 women (4-set), one is your target and the other 3 ones would be some sort of obstacles that have to be handled, either by earning their approval, having your wingmen working the group or other idea.For me, things are just a little more complicated than that. Oftentimes, from such group of 4 ladies, it may happen that 2 of them may perfectly be your number. How do you choose the target without even knowing anything else about them other than their looks?
In these cases, I just keep that in mind and keep playing the game as if I had two targets. After some minutes of interaction it will become clear to me which one is the most interesting one.
Microcalibration
This is a section in the eBook that ideally should not be necessary. That’s why it’s a good thing that Mehow added it, showing he is aware that many of us folks out there need the obvious to be said from time to time.
In my life, I’ve seen all types of people going out and socializing. And, being a good observer, I could not help but feel embarrassed by certain folks who really lack social skills. Some of them shake hands with you and look to their feet. Others are totally obnoxious dudes. Some never listen, they only talk. Others shoot the “sorry, what’s your name again” question five times during the interaction.
All this is related to microcalibration. If someone is nice to you, be nice back - and even just a little more. Give value. But do not try hard, just be cool.
